Humanitarian Relief

Introduction

Adhyatmik Foundation supports, when the need arises, various relief operations established to address the humanitarian concerns caused by man made and natural disasters around the world.  In some cases, Adhyatmik Foundation will partner with organizations to work jointly on projects.  In other cases, the Foundation collects and distributes funds to reputable organizations that have established links with the areas in need of relief supplies and resources.

Below you will find a list of Current, Ongoing and Past Relief Operations.  Some of these disasters took place 2 or 3 years ago so you may think that your help is not needed so long after the event.  These types of disasters, whether man-made or natural, cause wide spread destruction and devastation that takes years to remedy.  Your generous donation is still very important.

Philippine Flooding

Once again severe flash floods triggered by Typhoon Washi have greatly devastated the southern Philippines.  A few days after the event, relief agencies on the ground have reported that nearly 1000 people have been killed, with about 10,000 more missing across vast regions.  Pounding rain from a tropical storm swelled rivers and sent walls of water rushing through the southern Philippines while people were asleep.

Many were trapped in their homes as the flash floods coincided with high tides. In some places entire villages are reported to have been swept away.

Most of the 20 typhoons and major storms that hit the country each year affect the north - and many in Mindanao were unprepared for the severity of Tropical Storm.  Soldiers and volunteers are still searching for the thousands of people reported missing on southern Mindanao Island in the mud after the water subsided. Parts of concrete walls and roofs toppled vehicles and other debris litter the muddy streets.

The scale of the disaster has forced the local authorities to issue an appeal for body bags and coffins.

The Philippines Red Cross in coordination with the government and other aid agencies is helping in the search for those missing as well as providing for the many left homeless and without basic necessities.

Adhyatmik Foundation is contributing to the relief and rehabilitation efforts required in every way practical. Your support will enhance our relief efforts to provide:

  • drinking water/purifiers
  • food;
  • blankets and clothing;
  • medical supplies;
  • temporary shelters and/or relocation for the homeless.

Turkey Earthquake

It has been reported that over 430 people have died in the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that shook Eastern Turkey on Sunday, and more than 1,300 are injured, according to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Relief Agency. More than 2,000 buildings are in ruins. It is estimated that the epicenter of this quake was around Ercis, close to the Iranian border, and that several violent aftershocks followed the first tremor. The devastation is appalling:  survivors are walking around the destroyed buildings in a daze and rescuers dig frantically, in the hope of finding life trapped under the mountains of rubble.

The emergency response to the earthquake appears to be operating well. Yet while evidently the Turkish Red Crescent is distributing tents, blankets, stoves and other items to the tens of thousands of people whose homes were either destroyed or remain unsafe amid the regular aftershocks this is not sufficient to provide the basic necessities to the victims of this disaster.

The situation is all the more urgent given night-time temperatures that hover just above freezing.

In this humanitarian crisis Adhyatmik Foundation Inc (AF) is contributing to the relief and rehabilitation efforts required in every way practical. AF is working in close coordination in the affected areas with agencies, local authorities and NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) to ensure the relief reaches out to the people in the affected areas who need it most. Your help and support is urgently needed.

Your support will enhance our relief efforts to provide:

  • food;
  • drinking water/purifiers;

  • medical supplies;
  • rescue equipment
  • relocation away from the affected areas;
  • temporary shelters for the homeless

Thailand is currently experiencing its worst floods in half a century. Floodwaters have swept across 60 of Thailand’s 77 provinces over the past two months and rains have lashed the country incessantly for over three months, Evidently the floods have reached levels that threaten to overwhelm the carefully built barriers protecting the more than 10 million inhabitants of the capital of Bangkok.

It is reported that more than 2.5 million people have been affected or displaced by the floods and the death toll has exceeded four hundred.  Homes are submerged, floodwater is running through entire towns and approximately sixty thousand families are displaced.  Families are living on roadsides with floodwater running through their makeshift tarpaulin shelters and sanitation is severely affected.

This is yet another humanitarian crisis of huge proportions, and the need for aid remains desperate.   Adhyatmik Foundation Inc (AF) is contributing to the relief and rehabilitation efforts required in every way practical. AF is working in close coordination with local authorities and NGOs (Non‐Governmental Organizations) to ensure the relief reaches the people who need it most.

Himalayan (Sikkim) Earthquake

                    Sikkim Earthquake Map                            Sikkim Earthquake Home Destroyed

As reported, dozens of people have been killed and many more injured after a 6.9 magnitude earthquake shook the north-eastern province of Sikkim, a border state between India, Nepal and Tibet on Sunday 19th September 2011. Sikkim being the epicenter of the earthquake (was 64-68 km away from Gangtok). It is estimated that over 120 people are still missing. There is much debris, making search and rescue difficult; additionally rain and landslides are hindering the search and rescue operations: officials in Sikkim are concerned that the death toll could rise further. The homeless are of special concern with the approaching winter.

While local officials have offered assurance to do everything needed to deal with the situation, your help is needed to lessen the impact of the catastrophe.

 DONATIONS ARE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED TO ENABLE THE PROVISION OF:

  • MEDICAL SUPPLIES
  • FOOD AND CLEAN WATER
  • SHELTER
  • OTHER HUMANITARIAN SERVICES

Time is of the essence:  urgent steps are needed now to find, rescue, support and re-house the earthquake victims, their families, neighbors and friends in the region.

We welcome your help and any practical encouragement in support of Adhyatmik Foundation’s fundraising efforts and active contribution towards achieving our key objective of rebuilding the lives of communities as far as possible.

West Bengal Flooding

Torrential rains have caused wide spread flooding in parts of West Bengal in India, which is on the border with Bangladesh.  According to the Times of India, as of June 21, almost 200,000 people have been left homeless due to flood waters destroying their homes.  In some cases, a number of river embarkments were breached and entire villages were swept away by the flood waters.  Below is a report from an friend of Adhyatmik Foundation on the ground in India:

"Incessant rain has led to a flood-like situation in some parts of West Bengal on Sunday, even as heavy rainfall is predicted over the next 24 hours.

Parts of Bankura, Paschim Medinipur and Hooghly districts and the Sunderbans experienced heavy rainfall over the past 72 hours. More than 500 areas in North and South 24 Parganas districts are said to be vulnerable, with breaches occurring in the embankments of several rivers.

The deep depression that formed over the northern Bay of Bengal and crossed the West Bengal coast on June 16 has weakened and moved over Jharkhand. However, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in the coming 24 hours, said the director of the weather section of the Regional Meteorological Centre."

Your generous donation in support of relief efforts are greatly appreciated.

Japan Relief

The 9.0 earthquake that hit Japan on March 11th  2011 generated a fierce tsunami that crashed into Japan’s east coast, bringing horrendous devastation in its wake. Thousands of people are dead and many more are still missing or injured. Tens of thousands are homeless, without food or clean water or heat in freezing temperatures. Most of us can only imagine such a desperate situation.

Additionally there is the major environmental and health threat from the damaged nuclear reactors.

During similar disasters in other parts of the world, Japan has often assisted by donating generously in helping to alleviate the immediate needs - and on an ongoing basis.

In this humanitarian crisis of really huge proportions,  Adhyatmik Foundation, Inc (AF) is contributing to the relief and rehabilitation efforts required in every way practical. AF is working in close coordination in the affected areas with agencies, key stakeholders, local authorities and NGOs (NonGovernmental Organizations) to ensure the relief reaches out to the people in Japan who need it most.

    Ganga (Ganges River) Clean Up

       Ganga River Pollution               Praying in the Ganges

photos: AFP/Prakash SINGH and AP

Having its physical origin in the Himalayas, near Mt Kailas, no river symbolizes India’s spiritual heritage more than the Ganga, or Ganges River.  Indian mythology assigns the Ganga a divine status.  It is said that the river sprung from the divine waters of the spiritual realm, thereby explaining the water’s unusual purity.  Ganga is worshipped as a spiritual entity by millions of Indians who look upon the river as Ganga Mata or Mother Ganges since like a mother who sustains life, this loving mother embraces her children and cleanses them physically, emotionally and spiritually – a truly divine gift.

Yet, the Ganga River, once known for its exceptional purity, has become so contaminated that it has become a river of disease.  Its incredibly high pollution contains everything from industrial chemicals, polythene bags and worship materials, to raw sewage, and dead bodies.

The Ganga supports over 400 million people, and if the horrendous pollution is not controlled or drastically reduced, it will likely be the end of communities living along its banks.

There is a movement to deal with this vital project. India’s Minister for the Environment approved a ‘Mission Clean Ganga’ with the objective to ensure that by the year 2020 no untreated municipal sewage and industrial waste should flow into this 2500km long river. This would entail the formulation of detailed sewage treatment plants in critical pollution areas and major towns along the Ganga and its tributaries, building water treatment plants, fixing dams and other water quality improvement measures.  The high cost would be dispersed between central and state governments.

However, any campaign to make Ganga visibly clean and free of disease is a monumental task both physically and financially.  Since governments move notoriously slowly, it is often up to private organizations concerned about the future of such vital resources to generate awareness of the pollution in the Ganga and to take the initiative to deal with the problem.  It is also a priority to instill in the average people that Ganga is a national heritage of international significance and that all can share the responsibility to keep it clean.

Adhyatmik Foundation is actively engaged in this important project.  Funds are urgently needed to educate people and to support all efforts.   Traditionally Ganga Mata plays a part in every Indian life, from the practical to the spiritual.  Additionally, traveling seekers from all over the world meet disappointment when faced with the present conditions of the once legendary sacred waters. Without dramatic action to clean up Mother Ganga, this river’s own life is under threat.  Everyone can help bring purity back into daily life.

Please give generously to support this very important project.

House of Lords "Mission Sanitation" Project

SANITATION IN INDIA

House of Lords October 2008
UN Year of Sanitation
We need your financial/other help

Sulabh International Social Service Organization

WSS India                                              Women-In-Law

Adhyatmik Foundation Inc with it's sister organization Sulabh International Social Service Organization has practiced the important ongoing project "Mission Sanitation".

It has developed a scavenging free two-pit pour flush toilet; safe and hygienic on-site human waste disposal technology.  This is a new concept of maintenance and construction of pay-and-use public toilets with bath, laundry and urinal facilities and generations of biogas and biofertilizer produced from excreta-based plants, low maintenance wastewater treatment plants of medium capacity for institutions and industries.

The United Nations center for Human Settlements has recognized Sulabh's cost effective and appropriate sanitation system as "Urban Best Practice" at the Habitat -II conference held at Istanbul, Turkey in June 1996.  The Economic and Social Council of the United Nations has granted Special Consultative Status to Sulabh in recognition of its outstanding service to mankind and In July 2008 honored the work of the Mission.

In India, 400,000 children under the age of 5 die each year from diarrhea and from the lack of sanitation infrastructure.   Sulabh has set up a network of centres all over the country to train boys and girls from poor families, especially scavengers so that they can compete in the open job market.

Your generous donation will go towards continued support of Mission Sanitation.

Mumbai Bombing Relief

Terror struck as coordinated serial explosions and indiscriminate firing rocked eight areas across Mumbai including the crowded CST railway station, the Jewish center and 5 star hotels -- leaving many dead and horribly injured.

While the rest of the world is looking at this tragedy in the light of political and economic impact, it seems that little thought and even less help is given to the actual and innocent victims of this exhibition by the forces of chaos.

As always blame is being laid, but the critical issue at present is for those directly affected by the carnage. Media focus has been on foreigners, but what about the local impact? The dead are beyond reach yet those that have been injured and maimed, their lives destroyed, these are the ones who need long term help and care.  Help is needed for those directly affected by the tragedies, both physical /medical help as well as psychological counseling in dealing with this trauma.  Representatives of Adhyatmik Foundation were on site not long after the event to assist with relief work.  Adhyatmik Foundation works entirely with volunteers so that 100% of your donation goes towards the relief effort.

Pakistan Flood Relief

Reports have agreed that in 2010 Pakistan experienced the worst monsoon flooding in 80 years.  This began on July 22nd, causing a death toll ranging from 1300 to 1600.  Now, 7 months later, the rains continue to drown the already devastated land.  Pakistan’s floods have already affected over 20 million people - more than the Indian Ocean Tsunami, the Haiti Earthquake and the 2005 Pakistan Earthquake combined.

More than 800,000 houses have been damaged or destroyed; millions have been forced to flee their homes, hundreds of bridges washed away, cutting off communication from relief supplies.  Disease outbreaks pose new risks. Even once the waters recede enormous reconstruction work is necessary, which no nation can bear alone.  Others must assist – and on an ongoing basis.

This is a humanitarian crisis of really huge proportions. Adhyatmik Foundation is contributing to the relief and rehabilitation efforts required in every way practical.  The Foundation is working in close coordination on the ground with agencies, key stakeholders, local authorities and NGOs (Non‐Governmental Organizations) to ensure the relief reaches out to the people who need it most.

Haiti Earthquake Relief

The strongest earthquake in Haiti in over 200 years, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, hit the impoverished Caribbean nation on 12 January 2010 at 4.53 p.m. (local time). The earthquake struck Ouest Province (population 2.2 million), with the epicentre about 17km southwest of Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince. Nearby cities, Carrefour and Jacmel, along with other areas to the west and south of Port-au-Prince, were affected.  Powerful aftershocks shook this extremely poor country where many buildings are flimsy. Millions of people whose homes were destroyed have been living in sprawling tented camps for over a year under conditions that are unhygienic, even squalid.  Infrastructure damage – such as damaged or destroyed roads, bridges, water systems, and electrical and communications systems – will inevitably affect the speed and scale of the relief effort.  The casualties sustained by civil servants and the damage to public buildings and services have significantly reduced the capacity of national authorities to lead and coordinate the response.   NGOs and other agencies have stepped in to help rebuild the countries basic services and structures but there is still an enormous amount of work to be done to bring stability back to Haiti and its people.

DONATIONS RECEIVED WILL ENABLE THE PROVISION OF:

  • MEDICAL SUPPLIES
  • FOOD AND CLEAN WATER
  • CLOTHING
  • OTHER HUMANITARIAN SERVICES

We welcome your help and any practical encouragement.  You may give in support of Adhyatmik Foundation fundraising efforts towards achieving our key objective of rebuilding the lives of communities as far as possible.  Please give generously to support our efforts to assist in Haiti.

Karnataka/Andhra Pradesh Flood Relief

In 2009 the Southern Indian states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh experienced the worst floods in decades caused by heavy rains and discharge of water from three dams in the region. An estimated 18 million people  (according to UN and other agency statistic) have been severely affected. Hundreds of thousands of displaced people found themselves in temporary shelters and many more have no accommodation at all. The poorest of the poor- mainly women and children - are the worst affected. The rains followed India’s worst drought in nearly 40 years, and aid agencies are concerned about severe food shortages as the floods have damaged hundreds of millions of dollars worth of crops, and swept away livestock, which many farmers depended on to make a living. The total economic loss is estimated to be in excess of US$4 billion.

This is a humanitarian crisis of really huge proportions, Adhyatmik Foundation calls upon all members of the global community to contribute to the relief and rehabilitation efforts required to assist the people of Karnataka in every practical way.  The Foundation has been working in close coordination on the ground with agencies working with key stakeholders including the Government of Karnataka, local authorities and other aid agencies and NGOs (Non‐Governmental Organizations) to ensure the relief reaches out to the people who need it most. Please donate generously in aiding our efforts to assist those in dire need of basic life- maintenance support.
