About World NGO/NPO Day

The World NGO/NPO Day is an initiative to promote the concept of a global day of celebration to honour the contribution that NGOs, Charities and other not for profit organisations make to society. The ultimate aim is for the General Assembly of the United Nations to adopt a resolution establishing this day as a recognised international event once we have achieved sufficient national and regional momentum.

Our intention is to:

·      Develop the concept;

·      Champion excellence in the sector;

·      Promote the very best practice;

·      Celebrate achievement through awards and other recognition; and

·      Work to a global consensus on the benefits of such a celebration.

The first event will take place on 18 November 2011 in London, to introduce the plans to key players in the non profit sector in the UK and to discuss how this initiative will develop in the future.  Simultaneously we have requested partners and supporters to raise awareness of the initiative and to enjoy a moment to honour the role on NGOs and NPOs in their respective country or region. We hope to be able to include some of these activities on the website. It is our aim to hold significant events in 2012 to promote this work with a view to facilitating a major conference on 18 November 2012 to discuss the role of NGOs and NPOs globally – as well as key practical concerns and solutions - and to build upon this annually thereafter.

By visiting the website www.worldngoday.com you would be able to enroll without charge to demonstrate support for the initiative. We would be pleased to receive from you pictures, videos or quotes which would be showcased on the website and during the event.

If you are interested in becoming involved in this initiative, you may contact Dr Linda Spedding at linda [at] spedding [dot] org.  Dr Spedding, through Adhyatmik Foundation (www.adfoundation.org), serves as an Advisor to the World NGO/NPO Day initiative.
